ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 44 University of Michigan women's tennis team closed out its non-conference schedule with a 6-1 rout of No. 45 Western Michigan Wednesday night (March 16) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (5-6) won two of three in doubles before earning straight-set victories in five singles matches to improve their all-time record against the Broncos (8-4) to 25-5.
Michigan's 14th-ranked tandem of senior Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and sophomore Kara Delicata (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich Secondary) improved to 7-3 on the dual match season by defeating Malena Remynse and Rattiya Hiranrat 8-4 at No. 1. Junior Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) and sophomore Elizabeth Exon (Irvine, Calif./Woodridge HS) clinched the doubles point for the Wolverines with an 8-5 victory over Pryanka Parekh and Noriko Saruta at No. 3.
Senior Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) and freshman Allie Shafner (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) were leading late in their match with Carrie Jeanmaire and Reedhina Parkeh, but the WMU pair rallied and eventually won in a tiebreaker 9-8(8) to prevent a Michigan doubles sweep.
Streifler gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead and extended her winning streak to four matches with an easy 6-1, 6-0 decision over Colleen Mead at No. 6. Rutherford notched her 10th overall singles win of 2004-05 by disposing of Reedhina Parekh 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 to bring U-M to within one win of claiming the team victory.
Delicata provided the clincher at No. 3, defeating Remynse 6-4, 6-2 for her 25th career victory at Michigan. The 47th-ranked DaCosta had no trouble in her match at No. 1, cruising past Hiranrat 6-0, 6-3 to push the Wolverines' lead to 5-0. With the win, DaCosta moved into a tie for 12th place on U-M's all-time singles wins list (69-54).
Pryanka Parekh prevented a singles sweep by handing Shafner a 6-3, 6-4 loss at No. 5, but Exon ended things on a strong note with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jeanmaire at No. 2.
The Wolverines open their Big Ten Conference schedule next Wednesday (March 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center, hosting Michigan State at 6 p.m.
