STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Fifth-year senior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell) achieved her second NCAA automatic qualifying standard in as many weeks, winning the 3,000-meter run in a personal-best 9.14.24 and helping the University of Michigan women's track and field team to a second-place finish at the Sykes-Sabok Challenge Cup Saturday (Feb. 12) at Ashenfelter Indoor Track. The Wolverines finished with 110 points, ahead of third-place Pittsburgh (95) and fourth-place Central Michigan (59.5) but behind host Penn State, which took the meet with 121.5 points.
Gallo, who ran an NCAA automatic mile time last week at the Meyo Invitational, posted the fourth-fastest 3,000-meters time of the season and fell five seconds shy of the program record set by three-time All-American Sue Schroeder, who clocked in at 9:09.45 in 1986. Freshman Alyson Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's) finished second behind Gallo in the 3,000-meter run with a provisional-qualifying time of 9:24.80, crossing the line 10 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.
Three Wolverines scored in the 800-meter run, led by freshman Nicole Edwards' (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) first-place provisional time of 2:06.67, bettering her personal-best by 0.81 seconds and falling just 0.42 seconds shy of the facility record. Fifth-year senior Anna Jones (Omaha, Neb./Marian) finished sixth in 2:12.79 -- just 2.77 seconds out of third place -- while junior/sophomore Melissa Dunn (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) took eighth in 2:14.58.
Senior/junior Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) had a career-best performance in the mile and missed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard by 0.38 seconds, clocking in at 4:47.98 for second place. Sophomore Jackie Gaydos (Allen Park, Mich./Allen Park) took fourth in 4:52.92, while junior/sophomore Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) finished seventh with a personal-best time of 4:55.84 -- just 0.56 seconds out of fifth place.
Senior Sierra Hauser-Price (Van Nuys, Calif./Notre Dame) followed up her record-breaking performance in day one with a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash, improving on her previous fastest time by a tenth of a second by clocking in at 24.16.
Sophomore/freshman Laura Glynn (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) clocked in with a personal-best 1:35.09 in the 600-meter dash for sixth place.
In the field events, senior Jennifer Williams (Burton, Mich./Atherton) took fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 5-6, while junior Kelly Catino (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central) cleared a season-best 11-10 for fourth place. In the shot put, sophomore Bridgette Maynard (Madison, Mich./Bishop Foley) and junior/sophomore Jamie Barbour (Dearborn, Mich./Edsel Ford) finished the day with career performances, claiming sixth and seventh place with throws of 45-10 and 44-4 1/4, respectively.
Michigan hosts the Harold Silverston Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 19) at the U-M Indoor Track Building beginning at 9 a.m.
