PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference announced today (Tuesday, Nov. 8) that senior tri-captain Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team and Northwestern's Mike Alexandrov share this week's Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award. The honor is Vanderkaay's ninth of his collegiate career and first of the 2005-06 season.

In addition, Vanderkaay won back-to-back events in the 400-yard individual medley and as the last leg in the 200-yard freestyle relay. His 400 IM time of 3:56.62 was more than 2.5 seconds faster than the next closest swimmer. The captain followed by swimming a 19.97 split in the relay -- the fastest among all competitors -- as his team finished two seconds ahead of Georgia's 'A' team in 1:22.20.
Vanderkaay earned a pair of Big Ten Swimmer of the Week awards as a freshman in 2002-03, another four citations in his sophomore campaign and two more as a junior last season. He was also named Big Ten Swimmer of the Year for the second time in his junior year after sharing the award in 2004.
The Maize and Blue will take one week off before hosting its third straight home meet against intra-state rival Michigan State on Friday, Nov. 18. The showdown for a Challenge Cup half-point will take place at 6 p.m. at Canham Natatorium.
