Michigan at the Texas Invitational
The Maize and Blue will travel to Austin, Texas to participate at the Texas Invitational for the second time as they try to improve upon their fourth place finish at last year's meet. In 2004, all four of Michigan's victories came from this year's trio of captains. Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland) finished first in both the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes while Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) recorded victories in the 100-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle, respectively.
Last Time In The Pool
The fourth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team recorded its 30th straight Big Ten conference win after taking down intrastate rival Michigan State 152-83 on Friday (Nov. 18) at Canham Natatorium. Senior captain Davis Tarwater led the way for the Wolverines, winning two individual events and contributing to a relay, as the Maize and Blue took the top time/score in 11 of 13 events to improve its record to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten Conference.
No Stopping Us
In U-M's first three meets, senior tri-captains Chris DeJong, Davis Tarwater and Peter Vanderkaay have won every individual event for which they participated in. DeJong has placed first in five events with two against Georgia and one versus both Michigan State and Eastern Michigan. Tarwater and Vanderkaay have each touched the wall first in six individual events including three each verse Georgia. Vanderkaay's only individual defeat of the season came as he swam exhibition in the 100-yard breaststroke against NCAA qualifier Ian Clutten of MSU.
Fabulous Freshman
This year's freshman class has brushed off any nerves they once had as they have begun to prove themselves in the pool. Bobby Savulich (Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph) leads the pack placing first in four individual events, while Kyle Schroeder (Milan, Mich./Milan) and Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C./Butler) have touched in first three and two times, respectively, to round out the individual victories. The freshmen have also recorded nine second place and 14 third place individual finishes so far this season.
We're Going Live
If you're unable to make it to Canham Natatorium this season, you can keep up on all the U-M swimming and diving action as it is happening. MGoBlue.com will provide live scoring for Michigan's last scheduled dual meet in 2005-06.
