ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's swimming coach Bob Bowman announced that 2004 Olympic gold medalists Michael Phelps and Klete Keller will swim two exhibition events during the diving breaks at U-M's home meet this Saturday (Nov. 5). The fourth-ranked Wolverines face No. 10 Georgia at noon at Canham Natatorium in conjunction with the women's meet between No. 15 U-M and No. 3 Georgia.
Phelps, U-M's volunteer assistant coach, was a six-time gold medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. He won the 200-meter individual medley, 400-meter individual medley, 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter butterfly and was a member of the winning 400-meter medley relay and 800-meter freestyle relay teams. Phelps also took home the bronze medal in the 200-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle relay.
Keller, a Club Wolverine member, joined Phelps and U-M senior captain Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) for the 800-meter gold medal performance and also earned a bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2004 Olympics. The medals were Keller's third and fourth of his Olympic career after he took home a bronze in the 400-meter freestyle and a silver as a part of the 800-meter freestyle relay team in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Keller's 400-meter freestyle performance at the 2004 Olympics set the American record in a time of 3:44.11.
Along with their 2004 Olympic teammate Ryan Lochte, Keller, Phelps and Vanderkaay followed up their Olympic gold with another this past summer at the 2005 FINA World Championships in Montreal, Quebec. The team set the American record of 7:06.58, beating their next closest competitors by more than three seconds.
The Maize and Blue remain No. 4 in the country after opening the 2005-06 season with a dominating 155-58 win over Eastern Michigan (Oct. 21). Following the meet against Georgia, Michigan will take a week off, before competing against in-state rival Michigan State for a Challenge Cup half-point on Friday, Nov. 18, at Canham Natatorium.
