ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The fourth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team took down intrastate rival Michigan State 152-83 on Friday (Nov. 18) at Canham Natatorium. Senior captain Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) led the way for the Wolverines, winning two individual events and contributing to a relay, as the Maize and Blue took the top time/score in 11 of 13 events to improve its record to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten Conference.
The senior team of Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland), Andrew Albright (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), Tarwater and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) cruised to first place to open up the meet in the 400-yard medley relay. The foursome finished more than two seconds ahead of the next team in 3:19.25.
U-M continued the meet with three consecutive 1-2 finishes, beginning with the 1,650-yard freestyle as sophomore Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) led the whole way in a time of 15:40.81, followed by freshman Christian Sprang (Sicklerville, N.J./St. Augustine Prep).
In the 200-yard freestyle, Tarwater and sophomore Johnny Austermann (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) touched the wall in 1:39.29 and 1:40.86, respectively, with Austermann's time a personal record. Tarwater later went on to post the top time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:29.86).
Michigan continued the 1-2 trend in the 50-yard freestyle, as Peter Vanderkaay (20.75) placed first with DeJong finishing a close second (20.90). Freshman Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C./Butler) had a strong start in the 400-yard individual medley, leading for the first seven of eight splits until freshman Bobby Savulich (Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph) came back and posted 25.31 in the final split to take first in 4:01.24. Savulich has posted at least one victory in all three of Michigan's meets this season.
Led by DeJong (49.80), U-M posted its second 1-2-3 finish of the night in the 100-yard butterfly as sophomore Dane Grenda (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum) and freshman Evan Ryser (Katy, Texas/James E. Taylor) completed the sweep. Savulich then won his second individual event in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.12. Michigan State posted its first victory of the night in the 100-yard backstroke, as Spartan Rudy Wagenaar (51.39) squeaked by Patton (51.46) by just .07.
Kyle Schroeder (Milan, Mich./Milan) led all divers, winning both the one- and three-meter springboard events with 311.70 and 296.55 points, respectively.
Michigan also posted the top time in the 400 freestyle relay but did not receive points as the team swam exhibition.
The Maize and Blue will take one week off before its final meet of the calendar year, the three-day Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas. The meet will take place Dec. 1-3 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Bob Bowman
On the meet ... "I think they swam really well, about what I thought they would do. Peter's (Vanderkaay) 100 breast was really good. Sal Barba was really good today; he swam a great relay leg. Evan Ryser was very good in the butterfly and on the relay. We had a really good crowd and a lot of good support. I think the guys raced hard and that's what we ask them to do."
On the freshmen ... "I am happy with what they are doing. We are still training really hard, and I hope we will be better in two weeks in Texas."
