Scouting the Spartans
MSU returns 17 starters from last year's squad, including senior standout Ian Clutten. The senior earned two top-20 finishes at last season's NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes. The Spartans (1-3, 0-2) are coming off their third consecutive loss of its season, all to top-25 opponents, after falling 122.5-120.5 to No. 18 Notre Dame on Friday, Nov. 11. Michigan State's previous two losses came against Big Ten foes, No. 13 Northwestern and No. 14 Purdue, on Nov. 4. In his second season as head coach Matt Gianiodis holds a 5-9 overall record, including 1-5 in conference duals. MSU on the internet: www.msuspartans.com.
Michigan vs. Michigan State
Michigan has faced the Spartans every year since the 1944-45 season with Michigan holding a 71-5 advantage in the all-time series. The Wolverines have not lost to Michigan State since the 1976-77 season, when MSU earned a 63-60 victory. Last year, Michigan topped Michigan State 132-111 at Charles McCaffree Pool in East Lansing.
Cup Fever
The Challenge Cup -- the rivalry series between the common athletic programs at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University -- returns for its third season in 2005-06. The Wolverines have held the cup in all seven sessions since the cup's inception, including a 4.5-1.5 victory in the Fall 2005 session. U-M holds a 0.5-0 lead in the winter thanks to a 158-128 victory by the women's swimming and diving team on Oct. 28. The winner of Friday's meet will earn a half-point towards the Challenge Cup standings.
Big Ten Streaking
Michigan enters the MSU meet having won 30 consecutive meets over Big Ten conference foes, including victories in 61 of the last 62 meets. U-M's last Big Ten defeat came against Indiana 106-137 on Jan. 29, 1999.
Home, Sweet, Home
The Wolverines have enjoyed great success in Ann Arbor since the program's inaugural season in 1921-22. Michigan is 268-31-1 all-time in home meets and have posted a 57-6 record in Canham Natatorium since the opening of the facility in 1988.
Tri-Captains Guide Michigan Past Georgia
The fourth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team defeated No. 11 Georgia 179-121 on Saturday (Nov. 5) at Canham Natatorium. U-M placed first in 11 of 16 events as senior tri-captains Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland), Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) led the team to their second victory of the season, with Tarwater and Vanderkaay winning three individual events each and contributing to a winning relay, and DeJong sweeping the backstroke events and helping two relay teams to victory.
Add'em To The Collection
Peter Vanderkaay garnered CollegeSwimming.com National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week and Big Ten Conference co-Swimmer of the Week honors for his performance in U-M's victory over No. 11 Georgia. The awards were the first of his season and second and ninth, respectively, of his collegiate career.
'B' Season
Georgia's tough competition in the second meet of the season helped push four Wolverines towards NCAA 'B' standards. Freshman Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C./Butler) picked up his first NCAA standard of his young career after posting a time of 15:25.44 in the 1650-yard freestyle. Davis Tarwater began the defense of his 2005 NCAA championship in the 200-yard butterfly finishing in 1:47.10. Chris DeJong and Peter Vanderkaay also posted NCAA worthy times in the 200-yard backstroke (1:45.21) and 500-yard freestyle (4:23.91), respectively. Vanderkaay's 500 free mark was his second NCAA time of the day after he picked up an automatic 'A' time earlier in the 1650-yard freestyle.
