BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team continued its streak of excellence as it repeated as NCAA Great Lakes Regional champion on Saturday (Nov. 12) at the IU Cross Country Course. The Wolverines finished with 52 points, 16 points better than second-place Notre Dame; both teams earned automatic trips to the NCAA Championships by finishing in the top two.
On a beautiful afternoon, the Wolverines were successful in repeating as the Great Lakes Regional champions because of their ability to run in a tight pack. U-M had four runners in the top 14, with sophomore Alyson Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's) taking fourth place with a time of 21:07.0, senior Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves) placing sixth (21:17.4), junior/sophomore Erin Webster (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) coming in ninth (21:20.8) and senior Ana Gjesdal (LaCrescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) rounding out the top 14 with a time of 21:40.4.
Eight seconds behind Gjesdal was senior/junior Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) with a time of 21:48.4 as she finished in 19th place. Fellow senior/junior Kalamazoo native Jessie Stewart (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) rounded out the Wolverines in 41st with a time of 22:25.5. Finishing 13 seconds before Stewart was redshirt freshman Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) in 31st (22:12.5).
