Wolverines Take Down Buckeyes, Fall to Boilermakers

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team defeated Ohio State 208.5-91.5 and lost to No. 21 Purdue 156-144 on Friday (Nov. 11) at McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion. Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) and Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) each won two individual events and swam on the same quartet that won two relay events. The Wolverines won the first four meets of the day and won eight out of the 14 swimming events overall.
The quartet of Carolina Sierra (Medellin, Colombia/Colegio Palermo de San Jos), Valeria Silva (Lima, Peru/Alexander von Humboldt), Brady and Smith clocked in at 1:43.14, more than a second ahead of the second-place finishers from Purdue, to set a McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion record in the 200-yard medley relay. Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles) followed that up with her pool-record time of 9:55.87 to take first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
Smith finished more than a second ahead of the pack in both the 200-yard freestyle, with a pool-record time of 1:49.00, and the 100-yard freestyle, with a pool-record time of 50.97. Brady also set two pool records, with her first-place times in the 100-yard backstroke (55.33) and 50-yard freestyle (23.49). Both of Brady's and Smith's times surpassed NCAA 'B' standards.
Hannah Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) touched the wall in 2:02.08 for a top finish in the 200-yard backstroke. Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) finished third in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.37) and 400-yard individual medley (4:25.46), and second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.20), while Elsa Larson (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) took third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.52).
Elyse Lee (Albion, Mich./Albion) had the highest finish of all Wolverine divers with her third-place score of 251.10 in the one-meter diving and fourth-place score of 265.90 on the three-meter board.
Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) nabbed second place in the 400-yard IM (4:24.92) and third place in the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.32), while Payton Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) touched the wall third in the 100-yard butterfly (56.19).
The foursome of Brady, Hannah Smith, Noelle Martin (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) and Lindsey Smith finished off the meet with a top finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with an NCAA 'B' standard time of 3:24.44.
The Wolverines head to College Station, Texas, for the Texas A&M Invitational next Thursday through Saturday (Nov. 17-19) at the Student Rec Center Natatorium.
