WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Battling cold and winds throughout the three days, the University of Michigan women's golf team closed out its fall season with an 11th place showing today (Sunday, October 30) at the 2005 Landfall Tradition on the Jack Nicklaus Course at the Country Club of Landfall.
The Maize and Blue finished the 54-hole tournament with a 952 54-hole total. After opening with a 316 in Friday's first round of play, course management mistakes cost the Wolverines in the second round as they tallied a 321. Recovering slightly, the Wolverines closed with a 315 to give them the 11th place showing.
For the fifth straight tournament senior Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) has led the Wolverines as she recorded her fifth straight top 20 finish with a 230 total, tying her for 20th individually. After opening with an 82, she recovered well over the next two days recording back-to-back two-over 74s. Q U O T E S
Michigan coach Kathy Teichert
On the tournament ... "I am disappointed. It was a great field to play with. There are probably four or five teams in the top 15 in the country. To go out the way we did is kind of a disappointing way to finish the fall season. We just didn't manage the course well all weekend long. It is strange for me to even see all the silly mistakes we made out there. But we need move on and keep moving for to get better. It will be good to get a little time off and to regroup. We'll have a lot of time throughout the winter to prepare, to practice and to get better and have a good mindset going into the start of the spring season."
On the play and leadership of Amy Schmucker throughout the fall ... "She has been an exceptional leader for us. She has been doing it for us each and every week and that is great. One of the things that I am finding is that even when she has a bad hole, or shot, she is extremely calm and continues to play expecting good results. She is not allowing things to affect her outcome. That is the biggest reason why she is doing so well. I know I am really happy for her and I know the team is really happy for her."
N O T E S
With her tie for 20th place finish, Amy Schmucker has finished as the top Wolverine in all five fall events for the Wolverines. Prior to her senior season, she had only led the Maize and Blue in three total events, one in each of her first three years.
Amy Schmucker has now finished each of the fall tournaments among the top 20. She was the medalist runner-up at the Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 1-2), tied for seventh at the Lady Northern Invitational (Sept. 24-25), 11th at the Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 17-18), tied for 16th at the Tyson/Embassy Suites Invitational (Oct. 16-18) and tied for 20th at the Landfall Tradition (Oct. 28-30).
Amy Schmucker, Ali Stinson and Brianna Broderick were the only Wolverines to play, and start, all five tournaments in the fall season.
Lydia Bentez Coln started her first collegiate tournament at the Landfall Tradition. It also marks just the second tournament she has played in her young career. She played in her first collegiate tournament at the Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 1-2).
By playing in the 2005 Landfall Tradition, Amy Schmucker has played in 41 straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue, while Brianna Broderick and Ali Stinson have played in 29 straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue. Last season, former Wolverine Laura Olin set the U-M record playing in 50 consecutive tournaments.
