Wolverines Cruise Past Notre Dame in Exhibition Meet

ST. LUCIA -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team competed in an exhibition meet against Notre Dame on New Year's Day (Saturday, Jan. 1) as a part of its annual winter training trip in the Carribean. The Wolverines outscored the Fighting Irish 209-170 after winning five of nine short-course meter events at the Rodney Heights Aquatic Centre.
Individual event winners included junior Carolina Sierra (Medellin, Colombia/Colegio Palermo de San Jose), who took first in the 100-meter butterfly (1:03.40); freshman Valeria Silva (Lima, Peru/Alexander von Humboldt), who won the 100-meter breaststroke (1:14.01); and freshman Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS), who placed first in the 200-meter individual medley (2:22.42). U-M also captured the top time in both the 200-meter medley and the 500-meter freestyle relay races.
The Wolverines return to regular-season action next weekend (Jan. 14-15) when they travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational. Competition begins Friday (Jan. 14) at 6 p.m. and continues Saturday (Jan. 15) at 9 a.m. at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
