ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS) won the all-around and led the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team in a balanced attack to prevail over the No. 8 Iowa Hawkeyes with a score of 219.200-215.450 on Saturday (Jan. 15) at Cliff Keen Arena. Laury's score of 54.95 earned him first-place honors in the all-around ahead of Iowa's Michael Reavis, who scored a 53.625.
Freshman Dan Rais (Livonia, Mich./Franklin HS) got Michigan off to a strong start by winning the floor exercise with a career-best 9.55. Junior Gerry Signorelli (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS) followed with a 9.15, good enough for fourth place in the event. Junior Derek Croad (Jackson, Mich./Western HS) also turned in a strong performance, scoring an 8.7.
On the pommel horse, Laury and fellow junior Andrew DiGiore (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) and freshman Paul Woodward (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles HS) paced the Wolverines. Laury recorded a 9.15 for second place on the event, just ahead of DiGiore and Woodward, who notched a pair of 9.1s to tie for third. Sophomore All-American Aaron Rakes (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar HS) also turned in a solid performance, placing fifth with a score of 9.0.
On the rings, Laury and seniors Eddie Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) and Geoff Corrigan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS) ignited the crowd with their displays of unflappable strength and stuck dismounts. Umphrey won the event with a 9.625, just ahead of Corrigan and Laury, who tied for third with scores of 9.4 each. After the third event, Michigan had established a lead of 109.25-107.875 over Iowa.
Vault extended that lead, with the Wolverines grabbing the top three spots on the event. Umphrey won his second event of the evening with a career-high score of 9.55. DiGiore recorded a 9.50 for second and Rais turned in another career-best performance with a 9.4 and third place.
Michigan repeated its sweep of the top three spots on the parallel bars as well. Laury won the event with a career-best mark of 9.25, complete with a stuck double-pike dismount. Corrigan followed with a solid 9.2 to place second, while Signorelli turned in a clean routine and a stuck dismount of his own for a 9.1 and third place.
Strong performances from Laury and sophomore Andre Hernandez (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock HS) on the high bar served to solidify Michigan's win. Laury's high-flying release helped him to a 9.35 and third place, while Hernandez took fourth with a 9.25.
Also competing in tonight's meet were club teams from the University of Wisconsin and Eastern Michigan University.
The Wolverines return to action next weekend when they host preseason No. 1 Oklahoma on Saturday (Jan. 22) at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
