Linz Soars to NCAAs; Four Run Provisional Times at UK

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team posted an NCAA automatic qualifying standard and four NCAA provisional marks and dominated the middle-distance and distance events Saturday (Jan. 15) in the second and final day of the Kentucky Invitational.
Senior/junior Stephanie Linz (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) had Michigan's performance of the meet, setting an NCAA automatic mark in the high jump by clearing 6-0 1/2. Fifth-year senior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell) and freshman Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) posted NCAA provisional qualifying times in the mile, while junior/sophomore Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves) and freshman Alyson Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's) set provisional qualifying times in the 3,000-meter run.
Linz cleared an NCAA automatic qualifying standard height of 6-0 1/2 in the high jump to finish runner-up to 2004 United States Olympian Chaunte Howard of Georgia Tech, who cleared 6-1 1/2. Howard competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics and finished 28th in the world with a clearance of 6-0 3/4. Senior Jennifer Williams (Burton, Mich./Atherton) took fourth with a clearance of 5-8, while junior Porsha Ellis (Farmington Hills, Mich./Southfield Christian) placed eighth, clearing 5-4 1/4.
Michigan had a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying times in the mile, highlighted by Gallo's first-place finish, clocking in at 4:45.28, and a second-place showing and personal-best performance for Edwards, who finished a hair behind Gallo in 4:46.05. Fifth-year senior Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) took third in 4:58.25, while junior/sophomore Jeni Frudden (Iowa City, Iowa/West) finished in fifth place with a time of 5:01.71.
The Wolverines also dominated the 3,000-meter run, setting two NCAA provisional times and placing five athletes in the top 11, led by Walter, who paced the pack with a personal-best time of 9:23.15, and Kohlmeier, who took second just 0.42 seconds behind Walter with a time of 9:23.57, also a provisional qualifying performance. Both athletes were just over six seconds shy of the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 9:16. Senior/junior Chelsea Loomis (Traverse City, Mich./West) took seventh in 9:53.55, junior/sophomore Laura Brosius (Saline, Mich./Saline) placed eighth with a time of 9:55.98 and sophomore Erin Webster (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) rounded out the top 10 with a ninth-place showing, crossing the line in 9:56.32. Senior/junior Ana Gjesdal (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) crossed in 11th (10:03.84).
In the 800-meter run, senior/junor Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) led the pack with a time of 2:11.92, just 2.92 seconds shy of the provisional qualifying standard, while fifth-year senior Anna Jones (Omaha, Neb./Marian) took second place, clocking in at 2:13.29. Sophomore/freshman Laura Glynn (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) crossed in sixth place (2:15.50), while junior/sophomore Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) claimed 10th (2:16.48).
In the pole vault, junior Elizabeth Boyle (Northbrook, Ill./New Trier) topped the competition with a clearance of 12-5 1/2, while fifth-year senior Lynn Gasparella (New Hudson, Mich./South Lyon) took fifth place with a height of 11-5 3/4.
In the 400-meter dash, senior Sierra Hauser-Price (Van Nuys, Calif./Notre Dame) finished fifth, clocking in at 56.54, while junior Shavonne Maclin (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont School) took the seventh spot (56.79).
In the shot put, sophomore Bridgette Maynard (Clawson, Mich./Bishop Foley) finished third with a distance of 45-1, while senior Ashley Eckel (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) placed 10th with a distance of 41-6 1/2.
