Broderick, Olin Reach Third Round at Western Amateur

MADISON, Wis. -- University of Michigan women's golfers Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) and Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) each advanced to the third round of match play before being eliminated from the 2004 Women's Western Amateur Championship, held Monday through Friday (June 14-19) at Maple Bluff Country Club. Olin lost 3 and 1 to Carling Coffing on Thursday, while Broderick lost 3 and 2 to Ashley Gomes.
Olin tied for fourth in the two-day stroke play qualifying portion of the tournament, opening with a one-over-par 73 Monday followed by a 74 Tuesday for a 147 total. She opened match play with a victory over Casey North (2 and 1) Wednesday and followed with another convincing win, over Kristin Cook (5 and 4), in Thursday morning's second round before being eliminated in the round of 16 Thursday afternoon.
Broderick cracked the top 25 and qualified for the 64-player championship flight bracket by tallying a 155 (77-78) stroke-play total. In her first round of match play, she defeated Jessica Buchta (5 and 3) Wednesday and followed with a win over Emily Hoeper (2 and 1) Thursday morning before falling to Gomes in the third round Thursday afternoon.
Amy Schmucker (Cold Springs, Minn./Rocori HS) and Julie Inwood (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) played in the 2nd Flight match play bracket after tying for 81st in qualifying. Schmucker had back-to-back rounds of 84 for a 168 total, and Inwood shot 85-83/168.
Schmucker advanced to the semifinals of the 16-player bracket before being eliminated by the 2nd Flight runner-up Lindsay Huebert. Schmucker opened with a 1-up win against Danielle Hoff Wednesday afternoon and followed with a convincing 6-and-4 win over Julie Stupiansky in her Thursday morning match. Schmucker was eliminated in the semifinals by Huebert 2-up Thursday afternoon. Inwood opened with a 1-up victory against Stacey Lunduska before falling 3 and 1 to 2nd Flight champion Jackie Obermueller in the Thursday morning quarterfinals.
Brandi Zielinski (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) also played at the Women's Western Amateur and was placed into the 3rd Flight after tying for 107th in stroke play with a 176 total (91-85). Ashley Kemp eliminated Zielinski 1-up in her first match.

Broderick will play in this week's U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. She is slated to tee off at 2 p.m. Tuesday (June 22) and 9:10 a.m. Wednesday for the stroke play portion of the event. The top 64 players qualify for match play, which runs through Sunday.
