U-M Group Opens Competition at USA Championships

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Junior Geoff Corrigan (Colorado Springs, Colo/Palmer HS) led a group of six gymnasts with University of Michigan ties with his 14th place all-around performance (54.25) and fifth-place floor exercise effort (9.425) during the preliminary day of men's competition at the 2004 USA Gymnastics Championships.
Closely following Corrigan in the all-around were sophomore Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS) in 15th place (54.125), junior Eddie Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) in 20th (53.40) and sophomore Gerry Signorelli (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS) in 22nd place (52.925). All four gymnasts had an exceptional first day of competition as each had hit routines on all six events. All four athletes qualified to the second day of competition, to be held Friday.
Michigan alums Scott Vetere ('03) and Justin Toman ('02) competed only on three and four events, respectively. Vetere posted strong scores on the rings (9.45) and parallel bars (9.00), while Toman struggled, posting a high score on the parallel bars (8.725).
Current U.S. and world champion Paul Hamm is leading the field of competitors after the first day of competition with the top all-around total of 57.70. He is followed by Brett McClure in second with a 56.825 and twin brother Morgan Hamm in third with a 56.325.
The final day of competition at the USA Gymnastics Championships will be held on Friday (June 4), when the 2004 national champion will be crowned. The top 14 all-around competitors, using combined scores from both days, and approved injury petitions will advance to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials June 24-27 in Anaheim, Calif.
