ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's swimming and diving head coach Bob Bowman announced today (Tuesday, June 15) that former U-M volunteer assistant coach Dan Schinnerer has been hired as head assistant coach for the Wolverines.
"Dan Schinnerer is one of the best young coaches in the country," said Bowman. "We are delighted to have him on our staff at U-M. His knowledge of coaching technique and energy will prove to be a huge asset to our program."
As a volunteer assistant for the Wolverines last season, Schinnerer helped lead U-M to a fifth-place finish nationally, its best finish since 1996 when Michigan placed third. Individually Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) won national titles in the 400- and 1,500-meter freestyles and teamed with Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalger HS), Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) and Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) on the championship 800-meter freestyle relay squad.
Prior to coming to Michigan, Schinnerer taught history and coached swimming at The Peddie School in Highstown, N.J. As an assistant coach, Schinnerer helped The Peddie School claim a 2002 girls Eastern Interscholastic Championship, a 2003 boys Eastern Interscholastic Championship and a top-10 finish at the Northeastern Speedo Sectional Championship.
As an athlete, Schinnerer was a four-year letterman at Yale University, where he graduated with a history degree in 2001. During his career at Yale, Schinnerer represented the Bulldogs at four consecutive Eastern Conference championship meets and he garnered Yale's Willam Leeming Jellife Award for "greatest progress and development in swimming ability and outstanding leadership during his college years."
