NORMAL, Ill. -- Junior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) of the University of Michigan women's golf team closed out her 2003-04 season with a seven-over-par 78 in the final round today (Saturday, May 8) at the NCAA Central Regional. Olin, who shot 75 and 76 during the first two rounds, finished in a tie for 17th with her 229 54-hole total at Illinois State's University Golf Course.
In her final round, Olin started on No. 10 and hit snags early as she bogeyed three of her first four holes. After three straight pars, she closed out her first nine with a pair of bogeys on No. 17 and 18 to sit five over par. After making the turn, Olin rattled off six straight pars before closing out her regional with bogeys on two of her last three holes to give her a seven-over 78.
Despite tallying a career-best postseason 54-hole tournament total of 229, Olin was just out of the qualifying as an individual for the NCAA Championships. Southern Methodist's Laura Cross (72-71-79/222) and Illinois State's Samantha Richdale (74-75-73/222) both tied for sixth individually and qualified for the national tournament. Wisconsin's Malinda Johnson, who tied for 10th (79-77-71/227), was the third individual of a non-qualifying team, while Olin was fourth.
Vanderbilt used a four-over 288 in the final round to take the Central Regional title with an 893 team tally (298-307-288). Arizona finished as the runner-up with a 902 total (299-313-290) and Michigan State was third at 906 (302-303-301). The other five qualifying schools were defending NCAA champion Southern Cal, Baylor, Purdue, New Mexico and Texas A&M.
