Broderick Leads U-M to Tie for Fifth at Big Ten Tourney

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Freshman Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) recorded four straight rounds under 80 strokes and finished 10th individually to help the University of Michigan women's golf team to a tie for fifth place at the 2004 Big Ten Conference Championships at Ohio State's Scarlet Course. The Wolverines, who tied Wisconsin in the fifth spot, shot a final-round 318 Sunday (April 25) and tallied a 1,243 total (312-305-308-318) for the 72-hole event.
Host and No. 3-ranked Ohio State fired a championships-best 293 in the final round to reclaim the lead and run away with its third straight conference title. The Buckeyes finished with a 1,199 total (301-299-306-293), the fourth best in conference history for a 72-hole tournament. Indiana, which entered the final round with a two-stroke lead over Ohio State, tallied a 312 final round, dropping the Hoosiers to the runner-up spot with a 1,216 total (308-297-299-312). Michigan State rallied to finish third (304-317-307-299/1,227).
Indiana's Danah Ford set the conference championships 72-hole record with a one-under 287 total (74-72-70-71), taking home medalist honors by five strokes. Ohio State's Allison Hanna was the runner-up with a 292 total (72-73-74-73) and Buckeye teammate Kristen White was third at 296 (76-76-71-73).
As for the Wolverines, Broderick, who was competing in her first conference championships, hovered around the top 10 all three competition days and finished 10th with a 306 championships total, which tied the U-M record for lowest freshman total at the Big Ten Championships. In addition, her 10th-place finish was the highest ever by a U-M freshman at the conference championships.
Broderick, who finished as the highest freshman of any school, opened the championships with a four-over 76 and followed with her championships-best three-over 75. She carded her second 76 in the third round and battled rainy conditions in the final round as she closed out with a 79 to give her the top-10 finish.
Junior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) had an up-and-down conference championships as she tied for 24th with a 316 72-hole total. After carding an 83 in the first round, she fired back in the second round with a three-over 75. She fired an 81 in the third round but came back in the final round with a 77, the team's low round for the day, to crack the top 25 for the third straight year.
Sophomores Amy Schmucker (Cold Springs, Minn./Rocori HS) and Brandi Zielinski (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) both tied for 27th with 317 totals. Schmucker tallied rounds of 80, 81, 76 and 80, while Zielinski, competing in her first Big Ten Championships, had rounds scores of 79, 80, a career-best 76 and 82. Freshman Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) tied for 39th in her first conference championships with a 322 total after rounds of 80, a career-best-tying 75, 80 and 87, and redshirt freshman Molly Spalding (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS), who also made her Big Ten debut, tied for 49th with a 329 total after a career-best 77, 83, 84 and 85.
The Wolverines will now have to wait to see if they will receive the program's third bid to an NCAA Regional when NCAA selections are announced Monday (April 26). The 2004 regional sites (May 6-8) are: Normal, Ill. (Central); Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. (East); and Palo Alto, Calif. (West). The 2004 NCAA Championships (May 18-21) will be in Auburn, Ala., at the Grand National Lake Course.
