Five Wolverines Earns Berths for USA Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Five University of Michigan men's gymnasts traveled to the U.S. Olympic Training Center to compete in Saturday's (April 24) USA Gymnastics National Qualifying competition. All five earned berths to compete at the upcoming USA National Championships and the chance to earn a spot on the U.S. Senior National Team.
The top 13 all-around gymnasts and selected event specialists qualified to the USA Nationals. Sophomore Gerry Signorelli (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS) placed seventh in the all-around with a score of 52.325. Junior Geoff Corrigan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS) scored a 51.125 to place 15th but qualified as a five-event specialist. Junior Eddie Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) competed on four events (floor, rings, vault, parallel bars) and qualified on those apparatus.
Two Wolverine alumni, Scott Vetere ('03) and Justin Toman ('02), also qualified to the Nationals. Vetere competed as a three-events specialist on the pommel horse, rings and parallel bars, while Toman sustained an injury to his ribs and chest on the high bar during a training session and was unable to compete. However, a petition was filed which qualified him through the meet.
All five gymnasts will join sophomore Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEarchern HS), who was already qualified from his all-around performance at the NCAA Championships (April 2-4), to form a strong Michigan contingent at the USA Gymnastics National Championships, to be held June 2-5 in Nashville, Tenn. The top 14 gymnasts from that competition will make up the Men's National Team and move on to compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials (June 24-27) in Anaheim, Calif.
