KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team posted an event victory in the 4x1,500-meter relay and Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) added an NCAA Regional qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles at the two-day, non-scoring Sea Ray Relays, which concluded Saturday afternoon (April 10) at the Tom Black Track.
Friday's competition proved to be very successful for U-M, as the foursome of Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele HS), Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS), Jackie Gaydos (Allen Park, Mich./Allen Park HS) and Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) won the inaugural 4x1,500-meter relay at the Sea Ray Relays. Michigan's four mid-distance specialists clocked in with a time of 18:05.32 to win race by more than 28 seconds. Their nearest competition came from fellow Big Ten Conference members from Penn State, who combined for a time of 18:33.98.
In individual action, Simms notched her second straight NCAA Regional qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles when she crossed the finish line of her race in first place with a time of 58.76. Though she toppled the field in Section 2 of the event, six competitors in Section 1 had better times than the Michigan senior quad-captain.
Senior/junior Anna Jones (Omaha, Neb./Marian HS) nearly had her first NCAA Regional qualifying mark of the season when she finished Section 3 of the 800-meter run with a winning time of 2:10.46. Jones's first-place clocking was just 0.17 off the standard (2:10.29).
In their lone race on Saturday, the foursome of Jones, Gallo, Feldkamp and Erdman combined to finish third in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 8:36.65. Their time actually set the school mark for the event, breaking the previous record of 8:36.83 set by Jessica Kluge (1991-94), Molly McClimon (1990, '93-94), Karen Harvey (1992-95) and Katie McGregor (1996-99) in 1994.
The Wolverines venture to the West Coast for the Mt. SAC Relays next weekend. Competition runs Friday through Sunday (April 16-18) at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif. It will mark the first time Michigan has competed in the Mt. SAC Relays since 2001.
