Michigan Individuals Compete at Winter Cup Challenge

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Seven members of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team traveled to Las Vegas this week to compete in the Winter Cup. The meet focuses on individual results, as there is no team competition, with six spots on the U.S. National Team up for grabs to the top finishers in the all-around.
In Friday's (Feb. 6), all-around finals and event preliminaries, junior Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS) led the Wolverines, placing 23rd in the all-around (52.075), followed by sophomore Andre Hernandez (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock HS) in 25th place (51.95), junior Geoff Corrigan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS) in 43rd (49.175) and freshman Aaron Rakes (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar HS) in 47th (48.80).
The other three members of Michigan's team only competed on select events. Sophomore Gerry Signorelli (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS) had a strong showing on four events (did not compete rings or parallel bars), his highest score coming on floor (9.1) for 16th place. Junior Eddie Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) competed on the floor (8.40) and vault (8.85), while alumnus Brian Peterson had an off night on the pommel horse (7.80).
The top eight finishers on each event qualify to Saturday's (Feb. 7) Event Finals beginning at 8 p.m. PST. Laury was the sole Wolverine to qualify, placing seventh on the high bar (9.375). Michigan returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 14) when it hosts Minnesota at 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
