Michigan Defeats No. 12 Wisconsin in Final Home Dual

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team used an early lead to roll past No. 12 Wisconsin 24-16 on Sunday (Feb. 15) in its final home dual meet of the season. Michigan won the four opening weights and collected bonus points in five matches to earn the conference win.

At 157 pounds, senior/junior Ryan Bertin (Broadview Heights, Ohio/St. Edward HS) dominated early against Wisconsin's Tyler Turner, scoring two takedowns, a reversal and a three-point near fall to hold a five-point advantage heading into the second period. Bertin notched three more takedowns and a three-point near fall en route to a 20-7 major decision.
Fifth-year senior captain Pat Owen (Polson, Mont./Polson HS) earned a victory in his final home match with a 15-4 major decision over Chad Steldt at 165 pounds. Owen struck early with a first-period takedown and added three-point near fall to build a solid lead. Owen notched three more takedowns and a third-period reversal to collect bonus points for the Wolverines.
Sophomore/freshman 174-pounder Nick Roy (Wall, N.J./Wall HS) recorded a big upset victory with a 2-1 decision over 10th-ranked Ralph DeNisco. After a scoreless first period, Roy struck midway through the second frame, taking the Badger wrestler to the mat to gain the only lead he would need. After DeNisco cut the lead to a narrow one point following a quick escape, Roy fought of several scrambles through the final period to hang on for the win.
The Badgers cut the Michigan lead with back-to-back wins at 184 and 197 pounds. Brady Reinke built an early lead against freshman Joshua Weitzel (Lincoln, University, Pa./Oxford HS), scoring four first-period takedowns en route to a 13-4 major decision. Ryan Flaherty collected a quick fall at 197 pounds, pinning sophomore/freshman Chase Verdoorn (Platte City, Mo./Platte County HS) just 23 seconds into the match. Flaherty used headlock to take Verdoorn straight to his back.
The Wolverines split the final four matches evenly, winning at heavyweight and 133 pounds while dropping decisions at 125 and 141 pounds. Junior/sophomore heavyweight Greg Wagner (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider HS) earned two takedowns and nine back points in a 15-0 technical fall against Jareck Horton. Fifth-year senior Foley Dowd (Howell, N.J./The Peddie School) was a winner in his final home dual meet as the Wolverine captain used a balanced attack to beat 18th-ranked Ed Gutnik 10-1. Dowd scored a takedown in each period and added a two-point near fall while accumulating 2:40 in riding time to notch the major decision.
Michigan (16-3, 6-1 Big Ten) will close out the regular season next Sunday (Feb. 22) at Northwestern. The dual meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m. CST.
