STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team was paced by senior Robin Landfair's (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) runner-up showing in the 60-meter hurdles as the Wolverines sit in fourth place with 21 points after the first day of action (Friday, Feb. 13) at the Sykes-Sabok Challenge Cup in the Ashenfelter Indoor Track. Meet host Penn State holds the day-one lead with 73 points.
Landfair posted the highest finish of U-M's eight competitors on the first day of action when she clocked in with a season-best time of 8.55 for second place in the 60-meter hurdles. The time bettered her previous mark by 0.04 seconds, as the old time stood at 8.59 set in a victory at the Red Simmons (Jan. 24). Landfair's time was just 0.07 seconds shy of her personal-best clocking of 8.44 recorded at the 2003 Big Ten Conference Indoor Championships (3/2/03).
In other action on the track, Sarah Pizzo (Golden, Colo./Mullen HS) and Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) placed third and fourth in the 5,000-meter run, respectively. Pizzo led the Wolverine efforts as she placed third with a team season-best clocking of 16:45.80. Parker followed Pizzo over the finish line, crossing with a mark of 16:48.05.
In field-event action senior quad-captain Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) placed seventh in the long jump when she marked a season-best distance of 18-0 3/4.
Four other Wolverines were in competition, but their event, the pentathlon, was not scored. Senior quad-captain Doris Simmons (Cassopolis, Mich./Ross Beatty HS) led the four multi-eventers with a runner-up point total of 3,468. Jennifer Kulchar (Atherton, Mich./Burton HS) was third (3,441), Beth Vinckier (Yale, Mich./Yale HS) placed fifth (3,307) and Annessa Schnur (Butler, Pa./Butler HS) was sixth (3,873).
The Wolverines return to action Saturday morning (Feb. 14) to complete their two-day stay in State College, Pa., for the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup.
