ORLANDO, Fla. -- Senior wide receiver Braylon Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher HS) of the University of Michigan football team won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top wide receiver, announced tonight (Thursday, Dec. 9) at the ESPN College Football Awards show held at the Atlantic Dance Hall on Disney's Boardwalk.
| Edwards is Michigan's first Biletnikoff Award recipient. |
Edwards, the Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-Big Ten selection, led the Wolverines by setting school records for receptions (87) and receiving yards (1,221) in a season. He added 12 touchdown catches during the year, and with 36 career TDs needs one receiving score to equal Anthony Carter's (1979-82) school and Big Ten record. Edwards leads the Big Ten in receptions and receiving yards and ranks among the top five nationally in every major receiving category this season.
In other awards presented at the ESPN College Football Awards show, fifth-year senior center David Baas (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview HS), who earlier in the day was named co-winner of the Rimington Award as the top center in the nation, was up for the Outland Trophy for best offensive lineman, but was beaten out by Oklahoma's Jammal Brown.
Senior strong safety Ernest Shazor (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher HS) was a finalist for the Thorpe Award for best defensive back, but was edged out by Auburn's Carlos Rogers.
Edwards, Baas and Shazor were named to the Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America first team introduced during the two-hour awards show. Senior cornerback Marlin Jackson (Sharon, Pa./Sharon HS) was named to the second-team All-America squad by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
Edwards became the second Wolverine to win an award at the ESPN College Football Award Show presented by Home Depot, joining 2003 Doak Walker Award winner Chris Perry. Edwards will officially be presented his award at the 2004 Biletnikoff Award Banquet on Feb. 10, 2005, in Tallahassee, Fla.
