Michigan Sits in Second After First Session of EMU Invite

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The No. 15 University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team sits in second place after the first day of the Eastern Michigan Invitational, held Friday evening (Dec. 3) at Jones Natatorium. The Wolverines captured one-two finishes in three of six swimming events and won the lone diving competition to accumulate 348 points on day one. U-M is just eight points behind the host Eagles in the team standings.
Michigan had the top two finishes in the 200-yard backstroke, with sophomore Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS) touching in first with an NCAA consideration and pool-record time of 2:01.45 and junior Carolina Sierra (Medellin, Colombia/Colegio Palermo de San Jose) posting a season-best time of 2:05.26 for second place.
The Wolverines also claimed the first two spots in the 200-yard breaststroke. Freshman Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) took first place in 2:20.86 and junior Elsa Larson (Portland, Ore./Lincoln HS) was the runner-up (2:21.44).
The U-M 'A' quartet of Brady, freshman Katie Smith (Plano, Texas/Hebron HS), Sierra and senior Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich./Albion HS) took top honors in the 400-yard freestyle relay, clocking in at 3:30.49. Michigan's 'B' squad of senior Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS), Mueller, freshman Michelle Uhlig (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area HS) and junior Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) finished right behind the 'A' team at 3:30.77.
Sophomore Ellen Van Cleve (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) had an impressive performance on the three-meter diving board, capturing her first individual title with a total of 443.30 points. Freshman Elyse Lee (Albion, Mich./Albion HS) was the next Michigan finisher with a sixth-place total of 415.00 points.
Other top U-M finishes on the first day included sophomore Annie Stein (Longmont, Colo./Germantown Academy), who placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.03), and McCullough's runner-up finish in the 100-yard freestyle (52.47).
The EMU Invitational wraps up Saturday (Dec. 4) with two sessions, starting at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
