ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With victories in 12 of 14 events, the Maize squad of the University of Michigan women's track and field team contributed to the overall 660-560 Maize victory in the coed Maize and Blue Intrasquad on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 10-11) as the Wolverines previewed the 2005 season at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
Fifth-year senior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) set the pace for the Maize team, breaking two intrasquad meet records en route to victories in the 1,200- and 3,000-meter events. Gallo, a three-time NCAA All-American, registered a time of 3:29.11 in the 1,200 Friday evening to shave five seconds from the previous mark, set in 2002 by teammate Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS). Gallo lapped the 13-person field the following day to better the 3,000-meter record by 18 seconds with a showing of 9:41.02.
Sophomore/freshman Laura Glynn (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison HS) also earned a pair of individual wins in her first appearance at the annual intrasquad meet, posting a time of 1:38.13 in the 600-meter run while clocking 2:18.57 at 800 meters.
Three additional intrasquad meet women's records dropped over the course of the two-day event. Senior Sierra Hauser-Price (Van Nuys, Calif./Notre Dame HS) paced the 11-person field in the 200-meter dash with time of 25.05, trimming 0.53 seconds from the previous mark, set by Regine Caruthers in 2000.
In the field events, senior/junior Stephanie Linz (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) won the high jump on Friday with a mark of 5-10 3/4, adding three full inches to the old record, while junior Elizabeth Boyle (Northbrook, Ill./New Trier HS) bettered her own intraquad pole vault record -- set in 2002 and matched by Anna Fisher and Lynn Gasparella (New Hudson, Mich./South Lyon HS) -- by more than a foot with a mark of 12-0 1/2.
The Wolverines men's and women's track and field teams will open the 2005 season by hosting the Jack Harvey Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 8, at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
