DALLAS, Texas -- A record four members from the University of Michigan football program were named to the Football Writers Association of America All-America team announced today (Saturday, Dec. 11) during the Cingular/ABC Sports All-American Team Show broadcast at 2 p.m. EST on ABC Sports. The Wolverines' four FWAA All-Americans were the most of any team with players represented on the nation's second oldest All-America team.
Fifth-year senior center/left guard David Baas (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview HS), senior wide receiver Braylon Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher HS), senior cornerback Marlin Jackson (Sharon, Pa./Sharon HS) and senior strong safety Ernest Shazor (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King HS) made up the largest contingent of Wolverines ever named to the FWAA All-America team.
The first-team All-America quartet is the largest for the Wolverines since 1991, when linebacker Erick Anderson, wide receiver Desmond Howard and offensive linemen Matt Elliott and Greg Skrepenak received first-team accolades from numerous associations.
This is the sixth time in school history that at least four players earned first-team All-America honors during the same season. The other seasons with four or more All-Americans are 1981, 1976, 1971 and 1925. The Wolverines had a record five first-team All-Americans during the 1981 season, including offensive linemen Ed Muranksy, Kurt Becker and Bubba Paris as well as tailback Butch Woolfolk and wide receiver Anthony Carter.
