Gilliam Named Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team earned its first Big Ten Conference weekly award of 2004-05, as sophomore Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles HS) was named Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday (Nov. 9). Gilliam was recognized by the league for her performance during U-M's fifth-place finish at last weekend's Boilermaker Challenge (Nov. 5-6), at which she achieved the Wolverines' first two NCAA automatic qualifying standards of the young season.

Gilliam also swam to an NCAA provisional standard of 1:48.61 to place second in the 200-yard freestyle race.The two-time NCAA All-American has touched the wall first in four individual events this season.
It marks the second career conference award for Gilliam. She previously earned the distinction after winning three individual races to help Michigan to a 243-127 dual victory over Illinois at the Michigan Invitational last season (Jan. 16-17).
Gilliam and the Wolverines will host Big Ten rival Ohio State this Friday (Nov. 12). The dual meet with the Buckeyes is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Canham Natatorium.
