ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team's two entries in the ITA National Indoor Championships were eliminated from competition Friday (Nov. 5) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The doubles tandem of senior Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and sophomore Kara Delicata (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich Secondary) fell in the doubles quarterfinals, while DaCosta suffered a straight-set defeat in the second round of the 32-player singles draw.
DaCosta and Delicata, who upset the No. 4 seed to advance to the quarterfinal round, dropped an 8-6 decision to UCLA's No. 17-ranked duo of Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda. It was Michigan's first-ever appearance in the tournament's women's doubles quarterfinals.
DaCosta had her run at a singles title end with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Nebraska's Gitte Osterman in the round of 16. DaCosta was also U-M's first-ever athlete in the tournament's singles quarterfinals.
DaCosta and Delicata will join their teammates at the Wolverines' first event of the 2005 season, as the women's team will host the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 7-9, at the Varsity Tennis Center.
