The No. 9 University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team claimed a 132-111 victory on Friday, Nov. 19 over in-state rival Michigan State at Charles McCaffree Pool. The Wolverines swept the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle, the 1,650-yard freestyle and the 400-yard individual medley en route to the win. Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) and Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./The Webb School) each won a pair of events the lead the Wolverines (3-0, 2-0 Big Ten).
We're Going Live
If you're unable to make it to Canham Natatorium this season, you can keep up on all the U-M swimming and diving action as it is happening. MGoBlue.com will provide living scoring for both of Michigan's scheduled dual meets in 2004-05.
Where's The Broom
The Wolverines swept the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle, the 1,650-yard freestyle and the 400-yard individual medley in their dual meet at Michigan State. Brendan Neligan (Briarwood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS) claimed second and Johnny Austermann (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley HS) finished in third. Peter Vanderkaay won the mile in 15:55.51, followed by Zayd Ma (Ann Arbor, Mich./Clonlara HS) in second and Jorge Carral (Mexico City, Mexico/The Bolles School, Fla.) in third. What The Deuce

Tarwater won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.21 and posted the top time in the 100-yard butterfly at 49.37. He now has three individual wins this season. Peter Vanderkaay won his third and fourth individual titles of the year with wins in the 100-yard freestyle (46.25) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:55.51). Last season, Peter Vanderkaay was the NCAA Champion in the 1,500-meter freestyle.
A Great Dane
Freshman Dane Grenda (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum HS) won his first individual event as a Wolverine, earning a victory in the 100-yard backstroke at Michigan State. Grenda touched the wall in 51.88 to win the event.
The Michigan 500
Traditionally, the Wolverines have had a dominate swimmer in the 500-yard freestyle and have won the last eight Big Ten titles in the event. This season, Michigan has won the 500-yard freestyle at every meet so far. Brendan Neligan won the 500-yard freestyle at Eastern Michigan in 4:35.15 and freshman Alex Vanderkaay has won the event in U-M's past two meets.
