Bertin Drops Close Decision at NWCA All-Star Classic

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- University of Michigan fifth-year senior Ryan Bertin (Broadview Heights, Ohio/St. Edward HS) dropped a close 11-7 decision against Ohio's second-ranked Jake Percival in the 157-pound match at the National Wrestling Coaches Association's 39th annual Marine All-Star Classic on Monday (Nov. 22) in SIU-Edwardsville's Vadalabene Center. Bertin is the 21st different Wolverine wrestler to compete in the annual event in 27 appearances.
A late surge by Bertin, ranked third in the NWCA/InterMat poll, was not quite enough to overcome a 10-4 deficit heading into final frame. Starting the period in the down position, Bertin quickly earned his escape and turned to register a takedown to pull within three points, but Percival had riding time advantage to add another point to his final score.
Percival, the 157-pound runner-up at last season's NCAA Championships, built up an early advantage with three takedowns in the first period and led 7-4 after the opening three minutes. The Bobcat wrestler extended his lead with a quick escape and another takedown in the second and rode out Bertin for the remainder of the frame.
The All-Star Classic will be televised via tape delay on CSTV on Tuesday (Nov. 23) at 10 p.m.
Bertin will be back in action along with the rest of the Wolverine squad in two weeks at the Cliff Keen Invitational, Friday through Sunday, Dec. 3-4, in Las Vegas, Nev. Competition is slated to begin with pigtail rounds on Friday at 9 a.m. at the Cashman Center.
