This Week: Wisconsin Dual
The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team opens its 2004-05 Big Ten Conference season on Friday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. CST when the Wolverines to Madison, Wis., to face the Wisconsin Badgers at the UW Natatorium.
Michigan vs. Wisconsin
Michigan has not faced the Badgers since the 1995-96 season when the Wolverines topped Wisconsin 165-77 in Madison, Wis. Michigan and Wisconsin have squared off 45 times in the schools' history with Michigan holding a 41-5 advantage in the all-time series. In fact, Michigan has not lost to the Badgers since the 1980-81 season when Wisconsin topped Michigan 67-46.
Scouting the Opponents
Wisconsin -- This season, Wisconsin is 3-1 overall with a 1-0 mark in the Big Ten after a 209-138 victory at Iowa on Oct. 23. Head coach Eric Hanson is in his sixth season at Wisconsin. The Badgers return 2004 All-Big Ten second-team members Adam Mania and Eric Wiesner. Wisconsin on the Web: www.uwbadgers.com.
Michigan Cruises to Season Opening Victory
The No. 9 University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team claimed a 158-85 win tonight (Friday, Oct. 29) at Eastern Michigan in U-M's first meet of the season and first under the direction of head coach Bob Bowman. The victory marked the 37th straight year the Wolverines have opened the season with a win and improved Michigan's record against Eastern Michigan to a perfect 25-0.
The Wolverines (1-0) claimed victory in 11 of the 13 scheduled events with a number of Wolverines winning multiple events. Senior Christian Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) won the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke, senior Zayd Ma (Ann Arbor, Mich./Clonlara HS) took the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly, and senior Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park HS) claimed first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke.
Junior Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS), the 2003 Big Ten champion in the 200-yard backstroke, went away from his specialty to win the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events and teamed with freshmen Grant Burtch (Holland, Mich./Holland HS), Dane Grenda (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum HS) and Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) to finish first in the 400-yard medley relay.

Checking in on the New Guys
First-year head coach Bob Bowman earned his first collegiate victory with Michigan's 158-85 win over Eastern Michigan. The Wolverines' five freshman all made contributions to the victory in the first meet of their careers. Freshman Dane Grenda, Grant Burtch and Alex Vanderkaay teamed up with junior Chris DeJong to win the 400-yard medley relay in the meets first event. Grenda also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.77), Butch finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.01) and Alex Vanderkaay earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.56) and third-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.70). Fellow freshman Johnny Austermann (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley HS) earned a pair of third-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.48) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:40.41). The class was rounded out by Dane Rook (Metamora, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood HS) who finished fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.55) and seventh in the 200-yard IM (2:01.26).
Let's Try Something New
Junior Chris DeJong won three events at Eastern Michigan to lead the Michigan squad. However, all in all three victories, DeJong swam the freestyle despite being the defending Big Ten Champion in the 200-yard backstroke. DeJong claimed victories in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles and swam the freestyle leg of U-M's winning 400-yard medley relay.
(No) Splash!
Sophomore Jon Donadee (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield HS) earned his first collegiate victory in the three-meter springboard diving at Eastern Michigan. Donadee scored 247.05 to outscore second-place finisher, U-M's Jake Boehm (Glenview, Ill./Glenview South HS) by just under 12 points. Boehm finished with a score of 2335.12.

On the Horizon
Michigan will have one week off before traveling to East Lansing, Mich., to face Michigan State on Friday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. The meet will take place at the Charles McCaffree Pool.
