Michigan Lands First Big Ten Victory
The No. 9 University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team claimed a 1428-93 win at Wisconsin on Nov. 5 in its first Big Ten action of the season. Michigan posted the top times in 10 of the 13 events. The Wolverines (2-0, 1-0 Big Ten) received a pair of victories from both Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS) and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) to help seal the win. DeJong won the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke, while Vanderkaay finished first in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. The victory improves Michigan's record to 42-5 all-time against Wisconsin, including 14 straight against the Badgers. U-M has also now won 23 straight Big Ten openers.
Other individual winners for Michigan included Brendan Neligan (Briarwood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS) in the 1,000-yard freestyle, Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) in the 200-yard butterfly, Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) in the 500-yard freestyle and Jake Boehm (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) in the one-meter springboard diving. Christian Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) posted the top time in the 200-yard breaststroke as an exhibition competitor.
We're Going Live
If you're unable to make it to Canham Natatorium this season, you can keep up on all the U-M swimming and diving action as it is happening. MGoBlue.com will provide living scoring for both of Michigan's scheduled dual meets in 2004-05.
Up for the Challenge
When the Wolverines square off with Michigan State, one-half of a Pontiac Challenge Cup point will be on the line. The Pontiac Challenge Cup is a competition between the intra-state rivals, with the heads-up winner in each sport earning points for their school. For each season (fall, winter, spring) the cup is awarded to the school with the most points and in the event of a tie, the school that currently holds the trophy will retain it. The Wolverines have won all four Challenge Cup seasons so far, including a 3.5-2.5 win during the Fall 2004 season. So far in winter competition, Michigan holds a 0.5-0 lead thanks to a 159-133 victory by its women's swimming program over the Spartans on Oct. 27.
'B'-E-A-Utiful
Junior Peter Vanderkaay and junior Chris DeJong each surpassed a pair of NCAA 'B' standard times in U-M's meet against Wisconsin. Vanderkaay claimed victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.82 and won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:38.38. The 2005 'B' standard for the 100-and 200-yard freestyles is 44.83 and 1:39.07 respectively.
