INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The NCAA announced today (Monday, Nov. 15) that the University of Michigan men's soccer team has received an at-large bid into the 2004 NCAA Championship. The NCAA bid is Michigan's second straight and second overall in the five-year history of the program. The Wolverines (10-7-4) will face Mid-American Conference Tournament winner Akron (13-4-3) in the NCAA first round at 2 p.m. Friday (Nov. 19) at the U-M Soccer Field.
The Akron-Michigan winner will advance to the second round to face the No. 2 seed Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington, Ind. That match is set for Tuesday, Nov. 23, at a time to be determined.
Michigan topped Akron 4-0 earlier this season (Oct. 29) at the U-M Soccer Field. Michigan scored all four of its goals in the first half, including a pair of goals by Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS). Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) also had a solid game for the Wolverines, contributing a goal and an assist. Defensively, Michigan held the Zips to 12 shots with just three on goal.
Six of the seven Big Ten Conference that sponsor men's soccer made the 48-team NCAA field. In other first-round action involving league schools, Michigan State travels to Tulsa, Northwestern hosts Hofstra, and Ohio State entertains Memphis. Penn State earned the No. 10 seed and will host Tulsa-Michigan State winner in the second round.
The NCAA third and quarterfinal rounds will be held at campus sites. Third-round matchups will be played Nov. 27-28 and quarterfinals will be held Dec. 3-5. The four semifinalists will descend on Carson, Calif., Dec. 10-12 for the NCAA College Cup, hosted by UCLA and the Home Depot.
