MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Three members of the University of Michigan women's tennis team were eliminated from the 2004 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships Sunday (Oct. 24) at the Baseline Tennis Center. Senior Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and sophomore Kara Delicata (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich Secondary) suffered a defeat in the main draw doubles semifinals, while DaCosta and sophomore Elizabeth Exon (Irvine, Calif./Woodridge HS) fell in the round of 16 in main draw singles.
DaCosta and Delicata, ranked No. 8 in the ITA preseason national doubles rankings, outlasted Notre Dame's Brook Buck and Lauren Connelly, 9-7, in the morning quarterfinal match. Unfortunately, the No. 1-seeded U-M pair had their championship quest spoiled by Northwestern's Cristelle Grier and Audra Cohen, losing 8-2 in the seminfinals.
In singles action, DaCosta was upset by Iowa's Hilary Mintz, 6-4, 6-2, and Exon's run at the singles title ended with a tough 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 loss to Illinois' Cynthya Goulet.
The Wolverines will return to the court at the 2004 ITA National Indoor Championships, which Michigan will host Nov. 4-7 at the Varsity Tennis Center. As the host school, the U-M men's and women's tennis teams are each awarded one wildcard entry in both singles and doubles for the event.
