MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Junior transfer Nina Yaftali of the University of Michigan women's tennis team is still alive in singles qualifying of the 2004 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships after a pair of first-round victories Thursday (Oct. 21) at the Baseline Tennis Center. One more win would give Yaftali one of eight qualifying spots in the main draw bracket, which begins Saturday morning (Oct. 23).
After a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay's Jennifer Tan in the first round, Yaftali defeated Wisconsin's Nicole Beck, 6-1, 7-5. Yaftali will square off against Illinois' Macall Harkins in the qualifying finals tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 22) at 8:30 a.m. CDT.
Sophomore Lindsey Goldstein (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) was eliminated from qualifying action with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Minnesota's Ida Malmberg in the second round. Goldstein previously defeated Western Illinois' Amber Lenfert, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the round of 32.
Main draw doubles competition will begin following the completion of the singles qualifying. Goldstein and senior Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School), senior Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and sophomore Kara Delicata (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich Secondary), and junior Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) and freshman Allie Shafner (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) will begin play tomorrow afternoon.
