MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team posted eight event titles en route to 190.5 points and its seventh consecutive team victory at the Michigan Intercollegiate Saturday (Jan. 31) as five track and field teams from around the state competed in the Jack Skoog Track on the campus of Central Michigan University. The distance squad highlighted U-M's efforts as the Wolverines claimed titles in the mile, 800-, 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs.
Sophomore Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS) ran to her fourth individual event title and second NCAA provisional qualifying time when she turned in a time of 4:47.85 for a first-place showing in the mile run. Erdman's time also set the Jack Skoog Track record, breaking the old mark of 4:54.78 set by Katie Nowak of Ball State on Feb. 24, 2001.
Erdman actually led a 1-2-3 finish in the event as junior Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele HS) and junior Anna Jones (Omaha, Neb./Marian HS) placed second and third, respectively.
Senior/junior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) set a CMU facility record of her own when she crossed the finish line of the 800-meter run with a first-place time of 2:11.97. The time bettered the clocking of 2:12.59 set by Eastern Michigan's Margaret Ajayi on Feb. 24, 2001. Teammate Stephanie Hirtle (Salmon Arm, B.C./Salmon Arm Senior) finished runner-up with a time of 2:14.65.
Taking the lead from Erdman and Gallo, junior/sophomore Sarah Pizzo (Mullen, Colo./Golden HS) set the CMU facility record in the 3,000-meter run as she turned in a time of 9:49.84 for the event title. Pizzo's clocking topped Andrea Pullen of Central Michigan's time of 9:54.40 set back on Feb. 4, 2000.
Also winning event titles were Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS), Lesley Jurasek (Concord, Mich./Albion HS), Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS), Robin Landfair (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and the 4x400-meter relay team.
The Wolverines travel to South Bend, Ind., and the campus of the University of Notre Dame for the two-day Meyo Invitational (Feb. 6-7). Events begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Loftus Sports Center.
