Michigan, DaCosta and Rutherford in Final ITA Rankings

SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team wrapped up the 2002-03 season listed 38th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association final NCAA Division I rankings released Friday (May 30). The Wolverines (14-10, 5-5 Big Ten) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships with a 4-0 first-round victory over Colorado but fell 4-0 at top-ranked Stanford, the eventual national runner-up, in the second round.

In the final regional rankings, the Wolverines finished the season ranked sixth in the Midwest while DaCosta and sophomore Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) took 11th and 23rd, respectively, in singles competition. Rutherford, competing in the Nos. 3 and 4 singles positions during the season, posted a 22-10 season record and was 7-3 in Big Ten competition.
DaCosta and Rutherford also claimed a share of the eighth spot in the final regional doubles rankings, tied with Notre Dame's Katie Cunha and Kristina Stastny. The U-M tandem recorded an 18-16 season mark and went 6-6 in Big Ten action.
