Michigan's Season Ends Against Top-Ranked Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis season came to end Saturday afternoon (May 10) as the Wolverines lost 4-0 against No. 1-ranked Stanford in the second round of the 2003 NCAA Team Championship held at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Center. The Wolverines (14-10) were unable to gain a point as the two-time defending national champion Cardinal (22-1) won all three doubles matches and the first three singles matches completed.
Stanford won the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Alice Barnes and Amber Liu posted an 8-1 victory at No. 2 against junior Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and freshman Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS). Emilia Anderson and Story Tweedie-Yates clinched the team point with an 8-4 win over junior Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) and senior co-captain Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) at No. 3. The Cardinal's top-ranked pairing of Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette led 7-3 at No. 1 when the match was abandoned.
Tweedie-Yates started Stanford's singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Streifler at No. 6, while 27th-ranked Burdette added a 6-2, 6-3 win against sophomore Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) at No. 3. Fourth-ranked Liu clinched advancement with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over sophomore Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) at the top singles slot. The only match the Wolverines led was at No. 4, as junior Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) held a 6-4, 3-1 advantage over 11th-ranked Barnes. Tipirneni's match and the contests at No. 2 and No. 5 were suspended once the match outcome was decided.
