Michigan Takes Five of Six in Singles to Vanquish Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Victories in five of the six singles matches lifted the University of Michigan women's tennis team to a 5-2 victory against Indiana Sunday (April 6) at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts. The Wolverines (11-5, 4-2 Big Ten) claimed their second victory in 12 all-time matches against the Hoosiers (9-12, 1-5 Big Ten) in Bloomington with a dominating singles performance after losing the doubles point.
Indiana took an early 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Karie Schlukebir an Linda Tran gained an 8-3 victory over sophomores Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) to end a five-match winning streak for the Wolverines pair at No. 1. Junior Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and freshman Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) posted an 8-5 win against Sophie Rychlik and Dominika Walterova at No. 3 to force the deciding match at No. 2 for the team point. The Hoosiers came away with the point as Sarah Batty and Martina Grimm outlasted the Wolverines duo of senior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) and junior Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) by a 9-7 score.
Michigan dominated singles play with victories at five of the six spots to gain its fourth conference victory of the season. DaCosta won 6-4, 7-5 against Tran at No. 1, and the Wolverines received straight set victories from Plaushines, Duprez and Streifler at the No. 4 through No. 6 slots in the lineup. Rutherford iced the 5-2 victory with her team-leading 20th singles win of the season (20-6), tallying a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 victory against Grimm at No. 3. Indiana registered its only singles win of the match as Batty defeated Nolan at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2).
U-M completes its home schedule with conference matches against Illinois Saturday (April 12) and Purdue Sunday (April 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Matches start both days at 11 a.m.
