ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team was unable to send its two seniors -- Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) and Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) -- out with a victory on Senior Day, dropping a 4-3 match to Purdue Sunday (April 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (12-6, 5-3 Big Ten) won the doubles point but managed only two singles victories in losing to the Boilermakers (10-9, 5-3 Big Ten). U-M finished the home schedule with an 8-2 overall record.
Michigan earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Sophomores Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) continued their dominating play at No. 1, posting an 8-3 victory over Missy Wright and Lara Burgarello for the pairing's seventh win in its last eight matches. Purdue's Melissa Igbal and Gretchen Haynor claimed a win at No. 3 as Musgrove and junior Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) retired trailing in the match 6-5. The Wolverines gained the team point as junior Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and freshman Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) moved up to the No. 2 spot and won a closely contested 9-7 match against Shawna Zuccarini and Melissa Wood.
The Boilermakers rallied with four singles victories to hand the Wolverines their second home loss of the season. Burgarello and Zuccarini gave Purdue its first lead of the match, 2-1, with straight-set victories at the No. 6 and No. 4 spots, respectively. Michigan regained the advantage, 3-2, and claimed its only singles wins in straight sets. Streifler won a commanding 6-0, 6-4 match over Wright at No. 5, and DaCosta won her fourth straight match at No. 1 with a dominating 6-3, 6-2 victory against Haynor at No. 1.
Purdue won the final two matches on the court, a pair of three-setters, to claim the come-from-behind victory.
