Michigan Continues to Roll at Home, Thumps Marquette

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis squad completed an undefeated four-match homestand with a 6-1 victory Saturday (March 22) against Marquette at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (9-3) won their 12th consecutive home match dating back to last season by claiming the doubles point and earning victories in five singles matches against the Golden Eagles (3-12).
Michigan swept all three doubles matches for the third time this season to earn the team point. Senior Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) and junior Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) posted an 8-3 victory at No. 3. The Wolverines clinched the 1-0 advantage as senior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) and junior Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) recorded an 8-4 win over Annabelle Espinosa and Genevieve Charron at No. 2. The sweep was completed as sophomores Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) tallied an 8-6 victory at No. 1.
In singles, the Wolverines won five of the six matches to gain their third straight 5-2 victory. Duprez starting things with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Alexandra Stankovic at No. 6. Rutherford followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Veronica Garcia Briseno at No. 3.
The Golden Eagles claimed their only point of the match as Anna Pavlovic ended Plaushines' nine-match winning streak with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4.
Nolan put the match away for the Wolverines on the adjacent court immediately following Marquette's lone victory as she tallied a 6-4, 6-1 win over Espinosa at No. 2. Musgrove increased the U-M lead to 5-1 with a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Charron at No. 5.
The final match of the day, the only three-set contest of the afternoon, saw DaCosta outlast Eva Trujillo-Herrera at the top spot in the lineup. DaCosta won the match by a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 score.
The Wolverines return to action Tuesday afternoon (March 25, 4 p.m.) against Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. The match between the Wolverines and Irish will be played at the Courtney Tennis Center.
