Michigan Continues Home Streak with Win Over Broncos

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped the doubles point but rallied with five singles victories to record a 5-2 victory against Western Michigan Friday evening (March 14) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (7-3), who have won 10 straight home matches, gained their 14th straight win against the Broncos (8-5).

Western Michigan won the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The Wolverines kept the Broncos from a sweep as junior Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and senior Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) claimed a 9-7 victory at the No. 3 slot. WMU gained its first doubles win as Frederika Girsang and Melanie Peters won 8-4 at No. 1. The doubles point came down to a tiebreaker at No. 2. The Broncos' Valeria Stoilova and Rattiya Hiranrat tallied a 7-4 decision for a 9-8 victory and the team point over senior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) and junior Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) in the deciding match.

Michigan received straight-set singles victories from Nolan, sophomore Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School), Plaushines and Musgrove at the No. 2 through No. 5 spots in the lineup, and Duprez chipped in with a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 win against Rattiya Hiranrat at No. 6. The Broncos earned their only other point in the match as Frederika Girsang posted a 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 win against sophomore Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) at the top slot.

U-M completes the weekend series tomorrow (Saturday, March 15) against rival Michigan State at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Big Ten Conference match between the Wolverines and Spartans begins at 6 p.m.
