FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Fourteen swimmers from the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team claimed the top spot in the University portion of the three-day, long-course meters U.S. Open, which concluded Saturday evening (Dec. 6) in the King Country Aquatic Center. The Wolverines posted 357 points to lead the 14-team field, bettering second-place Florida by 147 points.
Sophomor Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) led the way for the Maize and Blue squad as he was the top Michigan finisher in three individual events -- the 200-, 400- and 1,500-meter freestyles. All three performances clocked in under the Olympic Trials cut standard for each respective event.
Vanderkaay opened his weekend with a runner-up performance in the 400 free when he clocked in with an NCAA automatic time of 3:52.94, just 1.07 seconds behind Club Wolverine's Klete Keller (3:51.87) for the event title.
On the second day of competition, Vanderkaay turned in a foruth-place showing in the 200 free as he touched the wall in an NCAA B standard time of 1:50.84. In his final individual performance in the water, the sophomore took third place in the 1,500 freestyle with a time of 15:27.50, his second NCAA automatic qualifying performance of the weekend.
Against top-ranked international competition, the Wolverines took three of the top 10 spots in two mid-distance freestyle events. Following Vanderkaay in the 400-meter free in each event were junior Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalger) and sophomore Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School). Hurd finished fifth in the 400 (3:55.96) and eighth in the 200-meter freestyle (1:5.72), while Tarwater was seventh in the 400 (3:58.68) and fifth in the 200 (1:52.35).
Tarwater added a runner-up showing in the 200-meter buttlerfly when he touched the wall behind former Michigan All-American and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Tom Malchow (1996-99) with a time of 1:59.96. Malchow was swimming for Club Wolverine, which is based in Ann Arbor.
Sophomore Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS) added an additional second-place showing when he posted an Olympic Trials qualifying time of 2:03.31 in the 200-meter backstroke.
The Wolverines return to college competition when they host Stanford over the Jan. 9-10 weekend in Canham Natatorium.
