With the victory, Michigan snapped a three-game losing streak, its longest since the 1999-2000 season.
With the victory tonight, Michigan improved its record against Michigan State to 122-109-10 overall and 63-41-2 at home. U-M is now 4-2 in its last six meetings with the Spartans.
The last time Michigan shut out Michigan State was on Jan. 7, 2000, at Munn Ice Arena. The final score of that game was 2-0.
The last time the Wolverines registered a home shutout against the Spartans was March 1, 1996, when U-M posted a 3-0 victory.
Michigan is 3-2 in CCHA "cluster" play this season against Michigan State, Miami (Ohio) and Ohio State. The Wolverines have seven games remaining against teams in their cluster.
Michigan improved to 3-2 in two-goal games this season. It was the Wolverines' third straight game in which an empty-net tally was scored.
Michigan is 10-2 this season when scoring the first goal of the game.
After going 0-for-3 on the power play tonight, Michigan has not scored a power-play goal in five games and is 0-for-19 during that stretch.
Junior Eric Nystrom's game-winning goal was his first goal in seven games and his first even-strength tally of the year.
Nystrom's goal was also the first game-winner of the season for the junior forward and the seventh of his career.
Nystrom's marker was his first goal in nine career games against Michigan State. Nystrom has three career points against MSU.
With 23 saves tonight, sophomore Al Montoya registered his third shutout of the season and the seventh of his career.
Freshman T.J. Hensick notched U-M's first empty-net goal of the season.
Hensick's goal was also the freshman forward's first point in three games. Hensick leads the Wolverines in scoring with a 6-10-16 line in 15 contests.
With an assist on Hensick's last-second goal, junior Brandon Kaleniecki extended his scoring streak to two games (1-1-2).
Tonight's contest against Michigan State marked junior Eric Werner's first appearance as a forward. In his 77 previous games with the Maize and Blue, Werner was a fixture on the Michigan blue line.
Senior defenseman Andy Burnes had a season-high four shots on goal.
Tonight's game marked the first of four meetings between the Wolverines and Spartans this season.
Tonight's attendance of 6,904 marked the second-largest crowd at Yost Ice Arena this season.
