ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A trio of Wolverines represented the University of Michigan women's tennis team at the ITA National Indoor Championships on Thursday (Nov. 6) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Freshman Elizabeth Exon (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) and the tandem of juniors Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) lost first-round matches and will head to the consolation bracket at the prestigious tournament.
After falling behind 4-0, Exon rallied late in the first set against Stanford's Alice Barnes, winning a pair of games to cut into Barnes' lead. The effort was not enough, however, as the Cardinal won the final two games to clinch the first set. Barnes continued her momentum into the second set, shutting out Exon to earn the 6-2, 6-0 match victory.
Playing on the adjacent court to Exon, DaCosta and Rutherford also suffered elimination from the tournament after falling to William & Mary's Megan Muth and Amy Wei in their first match. The Wolverine tandem initially kept the score close in early games but was unable to keep pace with the Tribe pair in the 8-2 defeat.
Play will resume at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 7) at the Varsity Tennis Center as the remaining players take to the courts for the second and quarterfinal rounds of singles and semifinals of doubles. The tournament, which runs through Sunday (Nov. 9), features the nation's top collegiate players, with a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for both men and women.
