This Week: Heading Down South ...
The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team takes its first road trip of the season this weekend, heading to SEC country for a pair of non-conference meets against No. 1 Auburn and No. 10 Georgia. The Wolverines will face No. 1 Auburn at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon (Nov. 7) in Auburn, Ala., and No. 10 Georgia at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 8) in Athens, Ga.
Scouting the Opponents ...
Auburn -- The defending 2003 NCAA team champions return 14 NCAA All-Americans and three individual NCAA champions to a team that is currently ranked No. 1 in the latest College Swim Coaches Association of America dual meet rankings poll, released last Wednesday (Oct. 29). Heading the pack of returnees are swimmers junior Fred Bousquet and sophomore George Bovell and diver Caesar Garcia. Bousquet won the NCAA title in the 50-yard freestyle, while Bovell was the national champion in the 200-yard freestyle at the 2003 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas. Garcia tied for the national championship on the 10-meter platform with Michigan's Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) as both athletes earned scores of 575.8. Georgia -- The Bulldogs enter the weekend action as the No. 10 team in the nation according to the latest CSCAA dual meet rankings (Oct. 29). Georgia is 3-0 on the season with wins over Louisiana State (Oct. 2), North Carolina (Oct. 15) and Clemson (Oct. 18). For more information on the Bulldogs visit: www.georgiadogs.com.
Series Records ...
Friday's meet will mark the first meeting between the Wolverines and the Auburn Tigers. Michigan will face Georgia for the fifth time in program history this Saturday (Nov. 8) when the Wolverines and Bulldogs take to Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga. The series is tied at 2-2 with Georgia taking the first two meets and Michigan winning the last two matchups, including a 131-111 victory during the 2001-02 season in Gabrielsen Natatorium.
The Last Time in the Pool ...
The No. 7-ranked Wolverines improved to 2-0 in the early goings of the 2003-04 season with a 125-118 victory over No. 6 Florida last Friday night (Oct. 31) in Canham Natatorium. Senior captain Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) led the Michigan charge with a pair of first-place individual finishes in the 100- and 200-meter freestyles and a relay title as the anchor of the 400-meter freestyle relay. With the meet still in the balance and only one race -- the 400-meter freestyle relay --to go, Michigan's foursome of Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS), Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School), Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) and Ketchum posted a winning time of 3:27.1 to hand the Maize and Blue the seven-point upset victory.
You Can't Ketchum ...
Senior captain Dan Ketchum led the Wolverines to victory last Friday (Oct. 31) with three event titles in the 125-118 win over No. 6 Florida. Ketchum posted individual event wins in the 100- and 200-meter freestyles, clocking in with times of 52.11 and 1:53.52, respectively. Ketchum also anchored the winning 400-meter freestyle relay team that sealed the Michigan victory as he touched the wall in 3:27.16, a final spilt of 51.26.
Kibbe Gets First Win ...
Freshman Jim Kibbe (Plano, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) swam to his first collegiate victory last Friday (Oct. 31) when he turned in a time of 2:24.50 to win the 200-meter breaststroke in the dual with No. 6 Florida. Kibbe also finished fourth in the 200-meter individual medley earlier in the meet with a time of 2:14.13.
Spread Your Wings and Fly ...
Sophomore Davis Tarwater earned his third event win of the season when he clocked in with the fastest time in the 200-meter butterfly last Friday (Oct. 31) against No. 6 Florida. Tarwater claimed the first-place finish with a time of 2:04.77.

The Wolverines opened the 2003-04 season as the No. 7-ranked team in the nation according to the bi-weekly CSCAA dual meet rankings released last Wednesday (Oct. 29).

The Urbanchek File ...
Michigan head coach Jon Urbanchek enters his 22nd year as head coach of the men's swimming and diving program. He has watched eight of his swimmers go on to earn Olympic medals. He led his 1995 team to an NCAA championship, while individually his swimmers and divers have racked up 36 national titles. On the conference level his teams have won 13 Big Ten championships while posting a staggering record of 96-4 in conference dual meets for a winning percentage of .960. His overall dual meet record is similar, as he has led the Wolverines to an impressive 160-31 (.838) mark.
Next on the Pool Deck ...
Michigan returns to action next week when it welcomes defending Big 12 Conference champion and current No. 3-ranked Texas Friday and Saturday (Nov. 14-15) in Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines and Longhorns take to the water at 6 p.m. Friday evening and return to the pool for a 1 p.m. tilt on Saturday.
