Athlete of the Year Cameron Highlights All-Big Ten Picks

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Big Ten Conference announced Thursday night (Nov. 13) at the annual postseason banquet that five members of the No. 23-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team had been named to the all-conference teams. Highlighting the night's award winners was junior forward Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS), whom the coaches voted the Big Ten Athlete of the Year. Cameron is the first Wolverine to earn the Big Ten's Athlete of the Year award in the program's four-year history.

Cameron ranks atop nearly every Big Ten offensive category this season. He is the league leader in shots (21), shots per game (3.50), points (13), points per game (2.17), goals (5), goals per game (0.83) and game-winning goals (3). Cameron is also second in assists (3) and assist per game (0.60). In all games, Cameron netted a Michigan-record 32 points on 12 goals and nine assists. He also scored a school-record five game-winning goals in 2003.
It marks the second consecutive year Cameron has been named to the All-Big Ten first team. He was named to the conference's second team as a freshman in 2001.
Taylor earned the first Big Ten first-team selection of his career after being named to the second team in 2001 and 2002. The senior defender started all 19 games for Michigan this season, posting career bests in points (13), goals (6) and shots on goal (17). Taylor tallied all of his six goals off penalty kicks, converting a perfect six-for-six on the season.
It marks the first all-conference accolade for White, the 2002 Big Ten Championship Offensive Most Valuable Player. As the Wolverines' career leader with 71 games played, White has been a mainstay in the lineup for four years. This season the senior midfielder was third on the team with 18 points on seven goals and four assists.
Dzubay also earned the first all-conference selection of his career, tying Jay Nolly of Indiana and Mike Robinson of Michigan State for the goalkeeper spot on the All-Big Ten first team. Dzubay is the league leader in saves (39) and saves per game (6.17). He is also second in the conference in goals-against average with a mark of 1.31 Dzubay set U-M season records with 85 saves and five shutouts in 2003.
Turpin rounds out Michigan's all-conference selections with his third consecutive All-Big Ten award. Turpin was a first-team selection in 2002 and a second-team pick in 2001. This season, he ranked second on the team with 26 points on a career-high 11 goals and four assists.
For the third straight year Coach of the Year went to Indiana head man Jerry Yeagley. Freshman of the Year honors were shared between Jed Zayner of Indiana and Gerardo Alvarez of Northwestern.
The Wolverines (13-6, 5-1 Big Ten) lost 2-1 to Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship first round Thursday afternoon and will await the NCAA Championship selection show next Monday (Nov. 17) at 4:30 p.m. on ESPNews to see if they are among the 48 teams selected participate in the national championship tournament.
