This Week: Texas Dual ...
The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team will host No. 2 Texas this weekend for a two-day scored meet in Canham Natatorium. Michigan will open the doors to Canham Natatorium for a long-course meters matchup with the Longhorns at 6 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 14). The two teams will return to the pool at 1 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 15) for the conclusion of the two-day meet, which will be swam in short-course yards. Last year the Wolverines upset then No. 1 Texas 123-120 in Austin, Texas.

Scouting the Opponents ...
Texas -- The Longhorns enter this weekend's competition as the No. 2 ranked team in the nation according to the latest CSCAA Swimming Poll, released Wednesday (Nov. 12). Texas boasts three current world record holders on its roster. Senior Ian Crocker is the world's fastest swimmer in the 100-meter butterfly as his time of 50.98 won the gold medal at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Complementing Crocker is one of the world's best backstrokers in sophomore Aaron Peirsol, who set the world record in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 1:55.15 at the 2001 Short Course World Championships. Crocker and Peirsol joined with teammate Brendan Hansen and Jason Lezak to post the world record in the 400-meter medley relay, combining for a time of 3:31.54 to win the gold medal at the 2003 World Championships. Hanson is also the American record holder in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:52.88 that gave him his third consecutive NCAA title last year.
Maize and Blue vs. Burnt Orange and White ...
Michigan is 5-4 all-time against Texas, with a 4-1 record in the friendly waters of Canham Natatorium. This year marks the second consecutive year the two teams have met in dual meet action. Last year the Maize and Blue earned a 123-120 upset victory over then No. 1 Texas in Austin, Texas.
The Last Time in the Pool ...
The No. 7-ranked Wolverines fell to 2-2 on the season as the Wolverines dropped a pair of non-conference dual meets at No. 1 Auburn and No. 7 Georgia last weekend in Southeastern Conference country. Michigan received three individual event titles from sophomore Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS), while senior Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) added a pair of individual victories vs. Georgia. Michigan dropped a 130-108 decision to Auburn last Friday (Nov. 7) then fell 133-110 to Georgia on Saturday (Nov. 8).
Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week ...
Sophomore Peter Vanderkaay was named Big Ten Conference co-Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday (Nov. 12) following three individual event wins and a pair of relay victories last weekend. It marks the third career Big Ten weekly accolade for Vanderkaay and the first for a Wolverine this season.
Ketchum Posts First NCAA Consideration Time ...
Senior captain Dan Ketchum posted the first NCAA consideration time of the season for the Wolverines when he finished second in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:52.99 at No. 1 Auburn. Ketchum's clocking was 0.24 seconds better than the NCAA standard of 1:53.24. The next day, Ketchum swam to an NCAA consideration time when he won the same event with a time of 1:49.90 at No. 10 Georgia.
Vanderkaay Follows Suit ...
Sophomore Peter Vanderkaay added his name to the NCAA B Standard list when he swam to a time of 15:06.54 to win the short-course 1,500-meter freestyle at No. 10 Georgia. The sophomore's time bettered the NCAA B standard of 15:30.25 by nearly 24 seconds and won the event by nearly 32 seconds. Vanderkaay was just 3.37 seconds shy of the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 15:03.17.
Spread Your Wings and Fly ...
Sophomore Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) earned his fourth and fifth event titles of the season with a pair of victories in the 200-meter butterfly over the weekend. Tarwater won the first of his two titles at No. 1 Auburn, clocking in at 2:02.86. The sophomore then posted a time of 1:59.47 to win the 200 fly at No. 10 Georgia just one day later. It marked Tarwater's first NCAA B standard performance of the season.
In the Polls ...
Following a pair of losses to Top 10 opponents, the Wolverines fell one spot in the latest bi-weekly CSCAA dual meet rankings, released Wednesday (Nov. 12). Heading into the dual meet with Texas, the Wolverines are ranked No. 8 in the nation.

The Urbanchek File ...
Michigan head coach Jon Urbanchek enters his 22nd year as head coach of the men's swimming and diving program. He has watched eight of his swimmers go on to earn Olympic medals. He led his 1995 team to an NCAA championship, while individually his swimmers and divers have racked up 36 national titles. On the conference level his teams have won 13 Big Ten championships while posting a staggering record of 96-4 in conference dual meets for a winning percentage of .960. His overall dual meet record is similar, as he has led the Wolverines to an impressive 160-33 (.829) mark.
Next on the Pool Deck ...
Michigan has two weeks off before the Wolverines swimmers travel to the West Coast for the U.S. Open. The U.S. Open is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday (Dec. 4-6) in Federal Way, Wash. Michigan's divers will head to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Invitational (Dec. 5-7).
