Olin, Michigan Claim First Place at Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Paced by junior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) and sophomore Amy Schmucker (Cold Springs, Minn./Rocori HS), the University of Michigan women's golf team won its own Wolverine Invitational by 25 strokes on Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 4-5) at the U-M Golf Course. Olin carded a record-setting one-under 71 in the final round Sunday en route to her first collegiate title, while Schmucker logged a career-best third-place finish.
The Wolverines opened with team tallies of 314 and 315, building a 16-stroke lead after the Saturday's action, and finished with a 314 final-round tally to earn their first tournament title of the season. James Madison was second with at 968 (328-315-325).

Olin led the Wolverines from start to finish as she ran away with her first title, winning medalist honors by 11 strokes. Olin carded rounds of 77 and 76 in cold and windy conditions on the first day, then set a Wolverine Invitational record with a one-under 71 in the final round. With a birdie on No. 5, Olin started the final round one-under through the first seven holes. Bogeys on No. 8 and 10 pushed her to one-over, but birdies on 11 and 17 moved her back into the red and helped her to a 224 54-hole tournament total.
Schmucker finished third individually, which is her highest finish as a Wolverine. After carding back-to-back 79s on the first day, she came back with a final-round 78 to give her a 236 Wolverine Invitational total.
Freshman Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) recorded her career-best tournament finish as she was ninth with a 245 54-hole total. She opened with a five-over 77 in the first round and followed with rounds of 83 and 85.
Freshman Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), senior/junior Courtney Goebel (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS) and redshirt freshman Molly Spalding (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS), who played as an individual, helped give the Wolverines six players in the top 10 as all three tied for 10th at 246. Broderick recorded her total after rounds of 83, 80 and 83, while Goebel had rounds of 81, 80 and 85 and Spalding fired rounds of 85, a career-best 79 and an 82 for her total.
Senior Sarah Kruer (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) and sophomore Brandi Zielinski (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), who competed as an individual, made it nine players in the top 15, as they tied for 15th with Wolverine Invitational totals of 250. Kruer had back-to-back 84s before carding an 82 in the final round, while Zielinski had rounds of 83, 82 and 85. Sophomore Kelly Easton (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS), who competed as an individual, tied for 28th with a 256 total (86-80-89).
The Wolverines continue their fall season with a trip to Manhattan, Kan., for the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 13-14). The 54-hole tournament, hosted by Kansas State, will be played at Colbert Hills Golf Club.

• With the team title, Michigan has now won five Wolverine Invitational titles in the tournament's 13-year history.
• With U-M's Laura Olin winning medalist honors, it marks the sixth individual title Michigan has won at the Wolverine Invitational. Olin joins Linda Drillock (1981), Becky Hayes (1990), Wendy Bigler (tri-winner, 1991), Cortney Reno (2000) and Misia Lemanski (2001) as Maize and Blue medalists at the Wolverine.
• Laura Olin won her first career tournament title at the Wolverine Invitational. Her previous top finish in a tournament was fourth, which she has recorded three times -- 2002 Wolverine Invitational (tie-4th, 229), 2002 Central District Classic (tie-4th, 220) and the 2002 Hawkeye Invitational (4th, 222).
• Olin's final round of one-under 71 set the Wolverine Invitational single-round scoring record. The record was 72, held by Indiana's Karen Dennison (2002) and Ohio State's Amy Langhals (1996).
• Amy Schmucker's third-place finish at the Wolverine Invitational is her career-best finish, topping the tie for fourth she had at the 2002 Wolverine Invitational in her first collegiate event.
• Courtney Goebel recorded a career-best tournament finish with a tie for 10th place at the Wolverine Invitational, her first top 10. Her previous best was a tie for 15th at the 2002 Wolverine Invitational.
• Ali Stinson set a new career-best finish, placing ninth at the Wolverine Invitational for her first top 10. Her previous best was a tie for 31st at the Mary Fossum Invitational, her first collegiate tournament.
• Molly Spalding played in her first collegiate tournament at the Wolverine Invitational. She finished tied for 10th with a 246 total, including a career-best 79 in the second round.
• Laura Olin extended her consecutive tournament streak to 28 by playing at the Wolverine Invitational. She has not missed a tournament in her three seasons. Amy Schmucker also added to her streak as she sits at 16 straight tournaments.
